How Swiss Companies Can Benefit from European IP Funds

Many European SMEs today can access non-repayable contributions to protect trademarks, patents, and designs. But what about Swiss companies? Although they are not directly eligible for EUIPO funding, understanding these instruments can unlock new strategic opportunities—especially for those operating internationally.
In an increasingly competitive and globalized market, intellectual property (IP) protection is a key asset for business success. While the European Union offers substantial resources to support SMEs in safeguarding their IP rights, Swiss businesses must navigate a more complex landscape—yet one that is still rich in opportunities.
What are the European IP funds?
The “Ideas Powered for Business” program is the most important initiative from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) aimed at supporting SMEs in protecting their intangible assets.
This fund, backed by significant resources, offers European SMEs the chance to access non-repayable grants to cover costs related to registering and protecting trademarks, designs, and patents. The goal is to democratize access to IP protection by removing the financial barriers that often prevent smaller businesses from adequately safeguarding their innovations.
The program provides several types of vouchers:
EU trademark vouchers: up to €1,500 for EU trademark registration
Design vouchers: up to €1,200 for design protection
Patent vouchers: contributions of up to €1,500 for preliminary patent searches
To be eligible, companies must qualify as SMEs under EU definitions, be based in an EU member state, and meet specific criteria. Funds are allocated on a first come, first served basis until exhausted.
Swiss companies are excluded—but not without options
It’s true: Swiss companies cannot directly apply for the “Ideas Powered for Business” fund. Despite Switzerland’s close relationship with the EU, it is not a member state, and its companies are excluded from this direct form of support.
However, this exclusion doesn’t mean opportunities are entirely off the table. Swiss companies can adopt indirect strategies to benefit from the framework and tools available:
Direct European IP registration
Even without access to vouchers, Swiss companies can register their IP rights directly with the EUIPO (for trademarks and designs, covering all 27 EU states) or the European Patent Office (EPO) (for patents, covering up to 38 countries).
Strategic partnerships
Collaborating with EU-based partners—via joint ventures, licensing, or distribution agreements—can unlock access to the EU market and strengthen IP protection strategies.
European corporate structures
Swiss companies with an international outlook may consider establishing subsidiaries or controlled companies within the EU. If these entities meet SME criteria, they may be eligible for EU funding.
Expert consulting
Partnering with experts like IP Way can help navigate this complex landscape and identify the best strategy for each unique situation.
